The Eye of the Storm

from The Eye of the Storm by Silence and Secrecy

/

about

The title is a pun based on the etymology of the word "window," which was the original title. Most of the track was slowed down a whole step, although much was added afterwards. The lyrics were heavily inspired by Thomas Ligotti, particularly the stories in Grimscribe, with one line essentially cribbed from "Miss Plarr"; although the paranoid terror of windows is more mine than his, and the overall arc of the song is certainly its own beast. For the geeks, the tuning is a subset of thirty-one-tone equal temperament—classical meantone used in a fairly eccentric, anti-classical fashion. (Nothing like vocoder jazz chords.)

Beats by Jane of planet JANE fame, albeit heavily treated; most of the instruments during the breakdowns are courtesy of Therapy Tapes, formerly Autosuggestion, yet formerly Angerfish (among other names), the eternal and magnificent.

lyrics

there is no moon
but there's a light in the room
at the top of the stairs.

in my notebook you drew
a disturbing cartoon;
you caught me in my unawares.

i know you're with me—
i know you're with me now.
i can't come with you—
i can't come with you now.

a house without doors, yet so many bright and open windows, is not unlike a head without a face, yet with great, bright, staring eyes, open at all times—"how beautiful, how brilliant, how wise!"

I observe the flow
and hazy glow
of phasing globes
that hover and strobe
and disappear like shadows
of faces pressed against my windowpane.

Patterns in transit
through stages of decay
slither behind the ruins
of crystalline configurations
deep inside the surface of my windowpane.

(am i on the wrong side—?)

We have time to let go of things
that we do not wish to keep.
Rain blurs skin and
light cuts space—
a voice to bruise the air:
a sound that stings the air.
Flaws reflected
become perfected,
but for a face that was not there,
there is no repair.

(what do i see—?)
